I’ve also included some keywords for each restaurant that should give you an idea what to expect when you arrive at the restaurant.
MAD – Modern Asian Dining
There are several MAD restaurants in Adelaide all serving up fast paced Asian cuisine that will leave both your mouth and wallet happy. One exception – the menu is entirely in Chinese characters, but don’t worry, just look around at what other people order! You can never go wrong with noodles or rice dishes which are usually filled with fresh ingredients. The atmosphere at MADs is always lively due to the quick service and attractive prices (most main meals under $10).
Hinoki Japanese Dining
Located in the heart of the city, Hinoki serves up quality dishes that will leave you stuffed! This restaurant is really great for beautiful meals at reasonable prices (most main meals under $15), although if you dine over the weekend be prepared to wait an hour or more for your food. While waiting, it’s recommended to talk with other patrons to pass the time quickly. The atmosphere at Hinoki usually isn’t too loud, but beware of high-pitched squeals from children once inside.
Raj On Taj Indian Restaurant
Intensely spicy flavours abound at this popular Indian restaurant on Hindley Street. After arriving don’t forget to order their famous mango lassi drink which perfectly compliments their spicy dishes. The atmosphere at Raj On Taj is always lively with groups of Indian students making the place seem like a club! A warning – most main meals are above $15.
An Italian Affair Italian Dining
The only thing better than good food is cheap good food, which is why An Italian Affair makes this list. Delicious pizza & pasta at unbeatable prices (most main meals under $10) make this one of the best restaurants in Adelaide for students on a budget. Some people complain that the service is slow, but I’ve never had to wait more than 10 minutes for my order to arrive after ordering, which isn’t too bad considering the price! The atmosphere at An Italian Affair can get really rowdy on the weekends so if you’re not into crowds, it’s recommended to go on a weeknight.
Wish You Were Here Cafe
This unassuming little cafe tucked away in the backstreets of Adelaide serves up some of the best food in Adelaide for cheap prices (most main meals under $15). The atmosphere at Wish You Were Here is really laid back with most patrons sipping on coffee while reading books or newspapers. Try out their famous wedgie – an open sandwich served with fresh ingredients and lashings of butter!
You can’t go wrong with this choice for a really casual meal.
Khan Baba Indian Dining
The only Pakistani restaurant in Adelaide serving up mouth-watering naan bread and creamy curries. Khan Baba is one of the most affordable restaurants in all of Adelaide, so you won’t have to break your wallet to get a decent feed. The atmosphere at Khan Baba is usually lively due to the incredibly friendly waiters accompanied by very tasty food! Try out their butter chicken – an extremely popular dish that many patrons order regularly.
New India Indian Restaurant
This family-run restaurant located on Unley Road serves up traditional dishes from India as well as Westernised fare popular with the younger generations. New India offers great value for money with most meals being under $10. The waiters can be a bit rude at times, but they’ll get your order right so don’t stress too much!
Noodle Kingdom Asian Dining
This is probably the quickest service you’ll ever have at an Asian restaurant as there are always dozens of people rushing in and out to pick up their takeaway or delivery orders. If you want a no-nonsense approach to Asian dining without any pretensions then the Noodle Kingdom is for you. There’s nothing special about this place – many Australians even say that the food is pretty bland, but if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it as their motto seems to be working very well indeed!
