Clean Water and Its Health Benefits

The human body is composed of mostly water, in fact, our body weight is 60% water. Every cell in the body needs water and so are the other body parts like tissues and organs. Water is an essential substance for the existence of an organism. Without water humans and other living organisms will not survive. However, water can also be a source of an organism’s nonexistence, especially to humans. Humans need water, but not just water – but clean water.

The source of clean water has been a primary problem in underdeveloped countries. Records show that about 1.8 million people die every year due to cholera, diarrhea and other deadly digestive diseases. Tens of millions of other people have been seriously sick due to various water-related diseases. The sad thing is many of these diseases could have been easily prevented – had these people have access to clean water.

Everyone deserves access to clean water that in fact, the United Nations considers it a basic human right. Sadly, until governments take a stand, clean water will forever be inaccessible for many people. To learn more about the benefits of water filtration, visit USA Berkey to learn more

Clean water provides nourishment – it is life itself. The body composed of 60% water is strong evidence of how important clean water is. Hydration is vital to humans for the proper functioning of their physiological systems. Organ health highly depends on adequate hydration. Enough hydration is also essential to maintain blood consistency. Blood delivers nutrients and oxygen to each part of the body. If blood gets thicker high blood pressure may be triggered.

A body properly nourished with clean water is resilient to diseases. If a body takes in contaminated water, a host of water-related disorders will cause havoc to a person’s health. The body may be affected by various diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, hepatitis, or typhoid. Although these diseases are curable, if taken for granted, death may be possible. It is of high importance that we make sure that the water we drink is clean.

Due to busy schedules, humans tend to resort to eating fast food, instant food, and processed food or drinks. These kinds of food contain a lot of seasoning and preservatives. In time, the daily intake of such food results in toxin build-up in the body. If these body toxins are not flushed out of the body, diseases will soon take over. To get rid of the toxins, a person needs to drink enough fresh and clean water.

Washing clothes or bathing with contaminated water can also bring sickness. Contaminated water can make its way to a person’s eye and cause an eye infection. Some skin irritations may also appear when a person bathes or wears clothes that are washed in dirty water.

There are various ways to have clean and safe water in the household. Most industrialized and developed countries have water treatment plants. These treatment plants follow international regulations on the water treatment process. The treatment process involves several procedures that are strictly followed. Pretreatment is the first step in the process of water filtration where screening of water happens. Filtering large fragments of trash and solid waste is the first step in pretreatment. Water is then treated with several substances like soda ash and chlorine for disinfection.

Unfortunately, even at the present modern time, there are still areas that have no access to treatment plants. It’s a good thing that there are other ways for effective water filtration.

Boiling is one of the basic alternative processes of water purification. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, water needs to be boiled for at least 1 minute (of course the clock starts when the water starts to bubble). It is important to check if the boiled water is cloudy. When it does, filter the water with any clean cloth, cotton, coffee filter, or a paper towel. Repeat the process until you see the water as crystal clear.

The use of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is another effective way of water purification. GAC filters are available for sale in most DIY stores. GACs can improve the color and taste of water. The chlorine content in the water is highly reduced when filtered using GACs. Additionally, carbon filters have antibacterial properties, thus, bacterial growth in filtered water is significantly reduced.

There are other methods of water filtration like distillation and reverse osmosis. However, these methods are relatively expensive and not suitable for the household. Both distillation and reverse osmosis water filtration require expensive apparatuses. Generally, bottled water businesses use these water filtration methods.
