History of Domaine Fourrier that you must know

The roots of Domaine Fourrier are a series of local wine merchants, starting in 1746 and still active today. Philippe Fourrier arrived in Normandy from Lorraine, bringing with him the know-how he had acquired while working as an apprentice winemaker in Rheims. He arrived in le Boullay, near Bayeux in June of that year and set up his wine dealing business on rue de la Corde. The family firm has produced a wide range of high-quality wines for more than 250 years and has withstood many crises along the way, including two world wars.

Located in France, Domaine Fourrier is a family-owned wine business specializing in making sparkling wines. Beginning with his grandfather in the year 1874, Domaine Fourrier has been passed down from generation to generation for over 136 years. The history spans from wooden barrels to the current stainless steel and riddling racks, each change made to reflect the times and keep up with the industry. The story of Domaine Fourrier dates back to the early 1900s, when Louis Fourrier’s grandfather, Maurice, started as an apple and cherry grower in Faverolles-sur-Cher. The enterprise would be expanded over the decade’s thanks to Louis’ father, Emile, who continued to establish and develop very wide orchards with exceptional fruit quality. At the time of Emile’s death in 1959, he had achieved quite a reputation for his highly appreciated wines. The Domaine was expanded even further by his sons who were able to leave it in perfect condition upon their retirement.

Domaine Fourrier is a family-owned producer located in the Loire Valley. It is a result of a dream, born in 1962 between Mr. Arnaud Fourrier and Mr. Léonard Masselin who are the actual first owners of the Domaine. Since then, the Domaine acquired one hectare here and another hectare there, thanks to careful work and wise choices. At present, it has 15 hectares of vineyards. A beautiful natural place where you can enjoy an amazing view of the whole Loire valley (10 minutes from the gorgeous village Anger).

In 1922, a pioneering winegrower named Paul Fourrier founded Domaine Fourrier in the heart of Burgundy. To this day, it’s still a family-run business: fourth-generation vintners Laurent and Michel Gros carry on a century-old tradition of craftsmanship, producing some of France’s best wines from the finest grapes in their cellars. Fourier represents a perfect blend of traditional and modern, from the elegant and old-fashioned labels, to the contemporary website and packaging. The owners, the Fourrier family, have been making wine since 1590. Today they have a stunning 65 hectares of vines in seven villages across Saumur, which has been rejuvenated by the recent planting of some experimental Chenin blanc and Gamay vines. There is also an impressive 8 hectares in Puligny-Montrachet. All this vineyard work is carried out by Nicolas’ son François who, with his brother Frédéric runs the Domaine today, in addition to managing their joint venture with Anglo-Saxon player Corney & Barrow called Domarim… all in a clear knowledgeable tone.

In 1605, the Duchess of Orléans ceded numerous vineyards to the Carthusian Monks of the Grande Chartreuse who held the land until 1791 when it was purchased by the Fourrier family. The domain was modernized under the direction of Antonio Fourier whose father had left Italy after being branded as a Red for his involvement in Garibaldi’s revolutionary movement. Antonio and his son Agosti were prominent figures in France’s viticulture community, heads of committees on ampelography, wine chemistry, and phylloxera; Agosti was also a Professor at Vincennes University specializing in viticulture and enology. Agosti Fourrier’s innovations in winemaking helped carry Domaine Fourrier to prominence in Burgundy. Domaine Fourrier consists of 4 ha.

The Fourier family have been vignerons for 10 generations in Ay! The wines are made traditionally, according to the quality of the vintage and age-old techniques. In 1892, Lucien Fourrier, from a normal vintage and with no financial resources, decided to carry out his bottling. Within two years, his wine was recognized as excellent at the National Exhibition of French Spirits in Paris. The story of the Domaine can be told only in one word: Performance. Performance in four generations of family vignerons, from father to son, from grandfather to grandson. Performance in the work and investment in vines, vineyard land, and winery equipment. The history of Domaine Fourrier starts with a legal entity dated 1651 created on the land of Chassagne-Montrachet by an eponymous farmer. This domain was bought in 1875 by Pierre Perrin, the grandfather of Alin Custom. It was expanded then to reach 10 hectares till the 1950s.
